Story Behind the Exhibit

The City Chambers Window Exhibit preserves an original leadlight window from the old Townsville City Council Chambers in Flinders Street. Once part of an important civic building, the window represents a time when public architecture was designed not only for function, but also to express pride in the growing city.

At the centre of the window is the City of Townsville crest, surrounded by decorative glasswork and framed by rich timber. The design includes palm-like decorative features and textured glass panels, creating a formal but distinctly tropical character suited to North Queensland.

This window would have been seen by generations of councillors, staff and visitors during the working life of the old chambers. Today, it offers a direct connection to Townsville’s civic history and the buildings that helped shape the administration and identity of the city.
