Hall One

Hall One is dedicated to the people of Townsville. It features fascinating artefact displays, individual histories of local personalities, and a collection of early office equipment and typewriters.

A major feature of Hall One is the display of medical equipment and instruments belonging to Dr Aubrey Bennett, a well-known medical professional and eye surgeon. Visitors can also view a large collection of pharmacist’s ingredients, tools and bottles from Townsville chemist William Green.

Hall One also features a rotating collection of dolls from around the world, donated by local resident Millie McLachlan, OAM. Visitors can read the incredible story of local craftsman and artist John Godschall Johnson, and view one of his world-famous violins, artwork and a portrait of the craftsman at work.

In 1940, Townsville Daily Bulletin gossip columnist Mavis Cussons wore a screen-printed silk ball gown featuring the news of the day to a fundraising ball at the Townsville Showgrounds. This special dress is now on display at the Museum.

Visitors can also view the display of the Mayors of Townsville from 1864 to 2024, along with the Chairmen and Mayors of Thuringowa before amalgamation in 2008.

In 1914, the Department of Primary Industries Animal Health Station opened its doors at Oonoonba. Hall One includes instruments and early photographs from the DPI display, offering another glimpse into Townsville’s working and community history.
