Early Pharmacy

This exhibit offers a glimpse into early pharmacy practice, where medicines were mixed, measured, bottled and labelled by hand.

Featuring bottles, scales, jars, tools, records and pharmacy items from Townsville chemist William Green, the Early Pharmacy Exhibit shows how healthcare and medicine were prepared and supplied in an earlier era.

Story Behind the Exhibit

The Early Pharmacy Exhibit showcases the tools and materials once used by Townsville chemist William Green. Long before modern packaging, computer records and mass-produced pharmacy systems, chemists played a hands-on role in preparing, measuring and dispensing medicines for the local community.

The display includes a wide range of bottles, jars, scales, measuring equipment and pharmacy tools, many of which reflect the careful work required behind the counter. Each item tells part of the story of how medicines were stored, mixed, labelled and supplied before today’s highly regulated and automated systems.

Pharmacies were important places in local life, offering not only medicine but also advice, remedies and practical support for families. This exhibit gives visitors a close look at the skill, precision and trust involved in early pharmacy work, while preserving a connection to one of Townsville’s historic chemists.
