Story Behind the Exhibit

The Doll Exhibit features a wide-ranging collection of dolls from around the world, generously donated to the Museum by local resident and collector Millie McLachlan, OAM. Displayed together, the dolls create a colourful and detailed snapshot of different cultures, costumes, traditions and styles.

Each doll has its own character, from traditional dress and handmade details to ceremonial outfits, folk costumes and decorative pieces. Some represent particular countries or regions, while others reflect popular stories, childhood memories or the artistry of doll making.

More than just toys, dolls often carry cultural meaning. They can show how people dressed, celebrated, worked and imagined the world around them. This collection also tells a local story, preserving the passion and dedication of a Townsville collector who spent many years gathering and caring for these pieces.

For visitors, the exhibit offers both nostalgia and discovery — a chance to remember childhood favourites while also seeing how dolls have been used to represent people, places and traditions across the world.
